In 1975 10 year old entrepreneur Byron Brandl purchased his first purebred Black Angus cow with profits from his fishing worm business in the tourist town of Sicamous, BC. The herds growth was slow at the beginning having only a handful of cows. In 1980 the first Brandl consignment was sold at the BC Provincial Bull Sale in Kamloops.
It was in the early years of the 80's that the Brandl herd really started to gain momentum with some quality foundation females added. These of note would be Ed Rene Black Velvet 38P, Annsdale Lady Wren 8E, Tomil Georgina GR 96M, and Aberlynn Miss Burgess 11'81.
In 1983 at the Canadian National Junior Angus Show, Byron was Grand Champion Showman and Ed Rene Black Velvet 38P was Reserve 4-H Champion Female. As the herd continued to grow in size so did the quality. In 1986 the home-raised BJ Sky King 621'85 was Grand Champion Bull at the Calgary Stampede and in 1987 BJ Lady Wren 81'85 was Reserve Grand Champion Female at Farmfair. Her daughter BJ Lady Wren 9'91 was a Farmfair Heifer Calf Champion and went on to raise BCC Eileenmere Lad 17F who was exported to England.
From 1989 through to 1993 Brandl's captured the Grand Champion Angus Bull title at the Kamloops Bull Sale all five years consecutive. This was a feat never before or since duplicated by another breeding establishment. It was in 1993 that the Brandl herd was moved from Sicamous, BC to it's present location at Jarvie, AB.
The Brandl herd also become instrumental in placing young herd bulls into some of the top breeding establishments in the world. Some of note were BJ Bardolier 24'90 to Sandy Bar, BCC Eileenmere Lad 215 was Calgary Bull Sale Calf Champion and sold to Rivercrest, BCC Eileenmere Lad 11G to Remitall, BCC Eilenmere Lad 23H topped the Superstar Sale at $12,000 to Spruce View and BCC Eileenmere Lad 17F to Nightingale in the UK. He soon became the #1 trait leader in the UK for muscle depth and was in the top 1% for weaning and yearling weight. BCC Dynasty 28L sold to Clover Meadow and BCC Superbull 19M to Spruce View along with BCC Dynastar 6N to Loma lanes just to name a few.
While selling some cattle to purebred herds - the focus has always been to raise sound, fuctional bulls for the commercial bull market. In recent years the shift has also been away from the major showrings to local smaller grass roots fairs. Some of the last major outings included the Supreme Champion Pen of Bulls at Farmfair in 2001 and Reserve Supreme in 2002.
In 2005 the decision was made to diversify the operation and include a Red Angus division to Brandl Cattle Co. While this program is still in it's infancy it is already achieving great results with Red BCC Black Velvet 68S selling at the 2007 Red Roundup Sale to Glengary, Get-A-long, and Mile High for $14 750.
